Cooking guide

How to cook king crab legs

A few foolproof ways to do it right at home, or let our kitchen cook it for you.

Steam (best)

Add 1–2 inches of water to a pot, set a steamer basket, bring to a boil, add legs and steam 5–7 minutes until hot through.

Bake

Wrap legs in foil with a pat of butter, bake at 400°F for 8–10 minutes. Easy for big batches.

Boil

Drop into rolling salted water for 4–5 minutes. Quick, but steaming keeps more flavor.

Grill

Brush with butter and grill over medium 4–5 minutes per side for a little char.

How to crack

Use kitchen shears down the soft underside of each segment, then pull the shell open and lift the meat out whole.

Let us cook it

Buy them at the market and we'll steam and crack them hot, ready to eat.

Pairings & tips

King crab loves drawn butter, fresh lemon and a little Old Bay. Round out the feast with corn on the cob, baby potatoes and our hush puppies. A crisp white wine or a cold lager is the classic pour.

Good to know

Questions, answered

How much king crab should I buy per person?
Plan on about three-quarters of a pound of legs per person for a meal, or a pound-plus for a real feast.
Is king crab already cooked?
Yes. King crab is cooked and flash-frozen at sea, so at home you're simply reheating it, about 5–7 minutes steamed.
King crab vs snow crab, what's the difference?
King crab legs are thicker, meatier and sweeter; snow crab comes in smaller, easy-crack clusters with a milder taste and lower price.
Where can I buy king crab legs in Indianapolis?
At Caplinger's Shadeland and Southside markets, by the pound. Call ahead for large orders.
Can you cook the king crab for me?
Absolutely, buy it at the market and our kitchen will steam and crack it for you, hot and ready.
