King Crab Legs in Indianapolis: How to Buy Them, Store Them, and Cook Them Right

Where to find real seafood in Indianapolis, and what makes it worth the trip.

King crab is the order people plan an evening around. It is also the seafood purchase people are most nervous about, because nobody wants to spend real money on crab legs and get it wrong. The good news: king crab is one of the most forgiving things you can cook at home, because the hard part was done on the boat. At Caplinger's Fresh Catch, we walk Indianapolis customers through this at the counter every week. Here is the whole conversation in one place.

What you are actually buying

Nearly all king crab sold anywhere in the country is cooked and flash-frozen right after the catch, then thawed for the case. That is not a compromise; it is how king crab is meant to travel from Alaskan waters to Indiana, and it locks in the sweet, briny flavor at its peak. What separates great king crab from disappointing king crab is handling from there: how it was frozen, how it was thawed, and how long it has been sitting.

At the counter, look for legs that are heavy for their size, glossy shells without white freezer-burn patches, and a clean ocean smell. Legs that feel light for their size lost moisture somewhere along the way, and that is the number one cause of disappointing crab. This is where buying from a real fish counter matters: our king crab moves fast, our team knows when each delivery arrived, and we will tell you straight what is best in the case today.

How much to buy

For king crab as the main event, plan on one to one and a half pounds of legs per person. Shell makes up roughly half that weight, so a pound and a quarter of legs yields a generous portion of meat. If crab is one dish among several, or you are serving rich sides, a pound per person is plenty. Buying for a crowd? Call ahead to your nearest Caplinger's Fresh Catch location and we will have your order weighed, packed, and iced when you arrive.

The easiest way to cook king crab at home

Remember: the crab is already cooked. Your only job is warming it through without drying it out. Steaming is the most reliable method. Set a steamer basket over an inch or two of simmering water, add the legs, cover, and give them six to eight minutes until they are hot at the thickest joint. No steamer? Wrap the legs in foil with a splash of water and a little butter, and warm them in a 350 degree oven for about ten minutes.

On the grill, brush the legs with butter and give them four to five minutes per side over medium heat. The shell chars a little and picks up smoke, which is outstanding. Whatever method you use, do not boil them hard and do not walk away. Overcooked king crab turns stringy, and there is no rescuing it.

Serving it like you have done this before

Kitchen shears beat crab crackers every time. Cut down the length of each shell section and the meat lifts out in whole pieces. Serve with drawn butter and lemon, a crusty bread, and something simple and green. King crab does not need help; it needs not to be buried.

Why buy it at a fish counter instead of the freezer aisle

A supermarket bag of crab legs tells you nothing about how many times it thawed and refroze on its journey. A fish counter is accountable in a way a freezer case is not. At Caplinger's Fresh Catch, you can see the product, ask when it came in, and get an honest answer, because our counter team eats this stuff too. That is the difference a seafood market makes, and it is why Indianapolis cooks have trusted us for the orders that matter.

Frequently asked questions

Are king crab legs already cooked when I buy them?

Yes. King crab is cooked and flash-frozen shortly after harvest. At home you are reheating, not cooking, which is why gentle steaming works so well.

How long do king crab legs keep at home?

Thawed legs are best cooked within a day or two, kept cold in the coldest part of your refrigerator. If you will not use them right away, tell us at the counter and we will pack them for the timeline you actually have.

How much king crab do I need for four people?

For crab as the centerpiece, four to six pounds of legs feeds four people well. Call your Indianapolis Caplinger's Fresh Catch location ahead and we will have it packed and ready.

Can I order ahead for a holiday or special dinner?

Absolutely, and before holidays we recommend it. Call your nearest location, tell us what you are planning, and we will make sure your crab is set aside.

Planning a king crab night? Stop by any Caplinger's Fresh Catch location in the Indianapolis area, or call ahead and we will have everything ready, iced, and packed to travel.
